Kazeem, the proprietor, is stylish in all the right ways. Which is to say he is totally current without being a snob. He was so engaging I could have talked at him for a long while, but fortunately for him some regular customers came in and rescued him from my enthusiasm. Opened by Nigerian-born Kazeem Lawal and his girlfriend, Jessica Kissell, in May 2012, the shop has a cozy, comfortable vibe (he was playing Dave Brubeck on the turntable when we visited). Along with a sweet collection of antique typewriters and accessories, Portland Trading Co. carries everything from Swedish Hasbeens, Balsam Fir incense, clothing for the modern-day ship captain and small-batch, high-quality home wares to well-designed clothing and shoes, food and beauty products and just bubbles over with personality.
