Carolyn Denham and Roderick Field are Merchant & Mills. The company was formed in 2010 to elevate sewing to its proper place in the creative world, respecting the craftsmanship it entails. They produce a range of card patterns and really useful kits and in profound contrast to the pretty, flowery image of the average haberdasher, they present superb and unusual sewing of notions in stark, utilitarian packaging.

Carolyn has a degree in fashion and has lived and worked in Italy and New York. She spent several years in Interior Design. Roderick is an established photographer and writer with works in the National Portrait Gallery. He is responsible for the company’s visual style and is currently designing artwork for a wide variety of contemporary merchandise.

HOUSE BOOK:

The new Merchant & Mills book.

HOUSE is a collection of inspirations, ideas and patterns for the home. This book was born out of the success of our PDF pattern bundle The Grove Creations. The Grove Creations contains patterns for the home that we designed while renovating The Grove, the Merchant & Mills house in Rye.

In addition to the original patterns, the book contains new and unseen patterns and an exploration into the importance of handmade in the home: Carolyn shares the story of The Grove and the process of renovating and designing a home around our fabrics; we share an interview with Victoria Barker of Faeger, an interior designer and an expert in creating both residential and commercial spaces that put handmade in the spotlight; we talk about why we champion natural fibres in both our homes and wardrobes, not only as a more conscious and sustainable option but also a practical and beautiful one.

“Designing The Grove was the catalyst to create a small collection of patterns that would work together to form a handmade home. These designs are scattered throughout The Grove, in different rooms and environments. They are an easy way to change up your space without the great expense of a renovation or large investment pieces.

Soft furnishings are a brilliant way to develop your sewing skills and start experimenting with textiles. When designing the projects, I thought about simple makes for all skill levels, including those who maybe wouldn’t attempt to make their own clothes but could start with a cushion or a topper. In this book we will work through the patterns, adding new techniques as you gain confidence.” – Carolyn Denham
